Pole Barn Build

Bookshelf Framing vs Traditional Pole Barn Girts

You said bookshelf framing bridges heat, won't resist racking, and my 2x6 skirts will sag. So I built a 10x24 lean-to and answered all three.

The build

A year ago I posted a video on commercial bookshelf framing on my DIY pole barn. Half a million views later, you had three arguments: it bridges too much heat, it won't resist racking, and my 2x6 skirts will sag.

So I built a 10x24 lean-to on the side of the barn and answered all three while I did it.

In this one I cut the header pockets into the 6x6 posts so the 2x10 headers carry down through the post to the ground instead of getting face-nailed to the side. I notch the skirt boards in flush, tie the whole wall system into the existing barn, and run 2x6 tongue-and-groove girts between the posts — solid wood bearing post to post, not nails doing the work.

Then I answer all three arguments straight up, including the one I'll concede ground on.

Is bookshelf framing perfect? No. Is it better than hanging 2x4s off the outside with nails? That's the debate. Drop your take in the comments.
